SATURDAY, JULY 28th -- Soul Man Sam/Albuquerque Blues Connection (BLUES NIGHT)
Soul Man Sam Albuquerque Blues Connection
"Soulman Sam" Evans began his singing career in Memphis, competing in
competitions and singing in the church choir. He grew up in the same neighborhood
as Otis Redding, Issac Hayes, B.B. King, Albert King and Al Green. He eventually landed
a job singing with the Bar-Kays. Sam was offered a recording contract with Memphis' famed
Stax Records, a deal which fell through when Sam moved to Alaska to help his brother,
whose wife suffered serious health problems. He started singing Rhythm & Blues again
in 1999, formed a band, and began opening for the likes of James Brown, Buckwheat Zydeco
and Gladys Knight. Now a resident of Santa Fe, Sam performs all over New Mexico,
bringing his style of Soul Music, Funk and Blues to the people. In 2010 Sam was joined by
guitarist Steve Hield, Trey Keepin on Saxophone, bassist Pablo Champion, and Albuquerque
drummer Jon Edwards to form “Soulman Sam and the Soul Explosion”.
Los Albuquerque Blues Connection--One of New Mexico’s longest running blues outfits

SATURDAY, AUGUST 11th -- Super Sax/Charlie Christian Project
The FINAL evening of Jazz & Blues Under the Stars for 2012. Don't miss it.
Super Sax NM Charlie Christian Project
Charlie Christian (1916-1939)
“SuperSax New Mexico” is a celebration of Med Flory and Buddy Clark’s Grammy-winning
Supersax formed in 1972. The group played 5-part harmonized arrangements of Charlie Parker’s
improvised solos and consisted of a saxophone section, rhythm section, and a brass instrument.
“SuperSax New Mexico”, created by bandleader and drummer Cal Haines, revives this challenging
and beautiful music using the original charts.
An outstanding lineup of New Mexico's first-call saxophonists once again takes on this finger-busting
music in their fourth rare appearance together. Players are Arlen Asher and Dave Anderson,
altos; Kanoa Kaluhiwa and Lee Taylor, tenors and Glenn Kostur, baritone. The famed Bobby Shew
is featured on trumpet, with a solid rhythm section of Bert Dalton, piano, Michael Glynn, bass and
Cal Haines, drums. Some of the bebop favorites include “A Night In Tunisia”, “Just Friends” and “Salt Peanuts”.
Charlie Christian Project--The Charlie Christian Project is a tribute to the music of legendary guitarist,
Charlie Christian who, though he died at the age of 25 (1916-1939), left an enormous legacy.
Both as the house guitarist at New York’s Minton’s Playhouse and a member of the historic
Benny Goodman Sextet, Christian led the transition from swing to bebop and pushed the electric
guitar into the spotlight when it was in its infant stages. Formed in February, 2011 at the urging of
bassist, Micky Patten, tonight’s ensemble features longtime Albuquerque resident and
Los Angeles session guitarist, Michael Anthony; Grammy award winning trumpeter,
Bobby Shew and drummer, Cal Haines.
