2025 Adult Education Summer

NMJW offers classes for adults of all ages and skill levels. Our long-running classes offer adults a chance to revisit their passion for music in a supportive setting. With classes ranging from Big Band to Jazz Improvisation to voice studies and beyond, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

All classes will be held at New Mexico Jazz office, 5500 Lomas Blvd. NE., unless otherwise specified. New Mexico Jazz members receive discounted tuition rates.

Your spot in a class is not guaranteed until we receive tuition payment. Due to the popularity of certain courses, tuition is due at time of registration, unless arrangements have been made. You are welcome to pay online, call the office to make a payment over the phone, or mail/bring a check to the office at 5500 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque NM 87110.

Class payments will be refunded in-full minus a 10% processing fee before the first class, no refunds given after a class starts.

Exploring World Music: Lecture Series

Multi-instrumentalist and award-winning educator Frank Leto will lead students on an exciting four-week journey through the vibrant sounds of Cuba, Africa, Brazil, and Trinidad & Tobago. Each week, we’ll dive deep into a different country’s musical traditions, complete with live instrument demonstrations and fascinating lectures on the artists, instruments, history, and styles that define each region. Experience the pulse of the world’s music — up close and personal!

About Frank Leto
Frank Leto is a master of Brazilian percussion, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and the lively steel drums of Trinidad. As the driving force behind his band PANdemonium, Frank performs vocals, steel drums, and percussion, weaving together an irresistible blend of reggae, ska, soca, calypso, samba, salsa, and zouk. Gypsy Jazz Guitar

This specialized course is designed for intermediate and advanced guitarists ready to dive into the intricate techniques and mesmerizing melodies of Gypsy Jazz. From the groundbreaking innovations of Django Reinhardt to modern-day interpretations, you’ll explore the soulful, high-energy world that defines this rich musical tradition. Through focused work on right- and left-hand techniques, fiery improvisation, rhythmic drive, chord progressions, and stylistic nuances, you’ll develop the tools to capture the spirit and swing of this genre.

This course is a deep and rewarding journey into the vibrant soundscape of Gypsy Jazz guitar. Students should bring an acoustic or archtop guitar and come prepared with a solid understanding of chord charts, neck diagrams, and tablature. And don’t forget—bring the thickest, heaviest pick or plectrum you can find… it’s part of the magic!

Reharmonizing & Arranging Standards

Mondays, 6:00-7:30 PM
6 Weeks: July 7 - August 11
Cost: $95 general | $80 NMJ members

In this course, we’ll dive into jazz standards and discover creative ways to level up their sound—transforming familiar tunes into fresh, exciting interpretations. We’ll explore alternative turnarounds, interludes, reharmonized intros and endings, and rich chord voicings that add depth and character. By experimenting with alternate harmonies and creative reharmonization, you’ll learn how to breathe new life into melodies and make your versions of jazz standards truly stand out. Along the way, we’ll also touch on tips for composing and developing your own musical voice. This class is open to all instruments and vocalists—if you’re ready to explore, reimagine, and reshape the standards, this is the class for you!

Blues Singing (July Session)

This dynamic class will delve into what it truly means to sing the Blues. Rooted in deep emotion and rich cultural history, the Blues is more than just a musical genre—it’s a powerful expression of the soul. While working on classic Blues standards, students will not only learn vocal techniques and stylistic nuances but will also explore how to infuse their own life experiences into each performance. Through guided exercises and soulful storytelling, singers will connect with the heart of the Blues and discover how to make the music their own. The course culminates in a moving and memorable recital on the final day of class, where students will share their personal journeys and interpretations in an unforgettable celebration of soul and song.
