2026 Adult Education Classes

NMJW offers classes for adults of all ages and skill levels. Our long-running classes offer adults a chance to revisit their passion for music in a supportive setting. With classes ranging from Big Band to Jazz Improvisation to voice studies and beyond, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

All classes will be held at New Mexico Jazz office, 5500 Lomas Blvd. NE., unless otherwise specified. New Mexico Jazz members receive discounted tuition rates.

Spring 2026 Sessions

Your spot in a class is not guaranteed until we receive tuition payment. Due to the popularity of certain courses, tuition is due at time of registration, unless arrangements have been made. You are welcome to pay online, call the office to make a payment over the phone, or mail/bring a check to the office at 5500 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque NM 87110.

If mailing or bringing a check please email so we can secure your spot.

Class payments will be refunded in-full minus a 10% processing fee before the first class, no refunds given after a class starts.

Continuing Jazz Guitar

Explore the art, challenges, and joy of jazz guitar improvisation in this hands-on class. Students will learn tunes alongside related scales, arpeggios, chord voicings, and comping techniques. The class also covers phrasing and stylistic examples that capture the language of jazz, as well as ear training to support improvisational development. Each session includes time to jam on the material covered, helping you apply concepts in real-time musical contexts. Please bring an acoustic guitar along with a notebook and pencil.

Blues Singing

This dynamic class will delve into what it truly means to sing the Blues. Rooted in deep emotion and rich cultural history, the Blues is more than just a musical genre—it’s a powerful expression of the soul. While working on classic Blues standards, students will not only learn vocal techniques and stylistic nuances but will also explore how to infuse their own life experiences into each performance. Through guided exercises and soulful storytelling, singers will connect with the heart of the Blues and discover how to make the music their own. The course culminates in a moving and memorable recital on the final day of class, where students will share their personal journeys and interpretations in an unforgettable celebration of soul and song.

Community Big Band

Love big band jazz? This class is for you! Students will dig into a variety of classic and contemporary big band charts while learning to navigate chord changes, ensemble playing, and solo sections. Whether you're in the sax section, holding down the brass, or keeping time in the rhythm section, this class offers a dynamic and rewarding experience that culminates in a live performance. Proficient music reading skills are required.

Jazz Singing

Over the course of eight weeks, students will explore the art of jazz singing, focusing on vocal technique, form, dynamics, improvisation, and stage presence. This interactive class is designed to help singers develop their individual style while learning how to collaborate musically with others. The final session will culminate in a recital accompanied by a live pianist. All levels are welcome—join us in a supportive and engaging environment where you can grow as a jazz vocalist and connect with fellow musicians.

Songwriting

Join our dynamic songwriting workshop, where singers and instrumentalists of all skill levels—from beginner to advanced—come together to explore the art of lyric writing and song structure. In this creative space, you'll experiment with melody, rhythm, and form while receiving valuable, constructive feedback from fellow musicians. The session culminates in a supportive performance of your original song, giving you the chance to share your creative vision with an enthusiastic audience. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your craft, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to ignite your songwriting journey.

Jazz Improvisation

Our Improv class is about helping instrumentalists and vocalists develop their melodic voice while relaxing and performing with others. We’ll address topics like harmony, rhythm, and form, and you'll immediately apply them by performing with a rhythm section. Beginner to advanced; all levels will benefit from our "on the job" training.
